NEMS IN THE NEWS

NEMS Science Teachers Receives 3-D Printer from Donor's Choose

Congratulations to Scott Sutherland whose project on www.donorschoose.org was just funded by 7 donors including, Horace Mann compliments of local agent, Kevin Hunt.

Horace Mann was able to make the last monetary donation that was needed so that Mr. Sutherland can get a 3-D printer.

Matching funds from Bill & Melinda Gates foundation made earlier donations even more impactful!

This was truly a team effort to get a very neat piece of technology for NEMS.

New Ellenton Middle School teacher’s DonorsChoose.org project completed
in Horace Mann’s “Seventy in 70” giveaway

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Oct. 5, 2015) – Scott Sutherland’s DonorsChoose.org project is one of more than 70 receiving funding in Horace Mann’s “Seventy in 70” giveaway. The giveaway celebrates Horace Mann’s 70 years of helping educators reach their financial goals. By funding supplies through DonorsChoose.org, Horace Mann helps limit personal resources teachers spend in the classroom.

Sutherland, a teacher at New Ellenton Middle School in New Ellenton, South Carolina, wants his students to use a 3D printer to create models in their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) classes. “The technology in this 3D printer will help teach standards from the new science curriculum being implemented next year, help students create new and innovate models, presentations for our STEAM units, and promote innovative thinking skills for creation of new products,” said Sutherland in his project post. “This will give them an opportunity to bring their inventions to life and promote out of the box thinking that will set them ahead for their futures!”

The “Seventy in 70” giveaway funded more than 70 DonorsChoose.org projects throughout the nation, a total of $35,000 in donations. DonorsChoose.org is a website where teachers post requests for classroom supplies or tools, and donors choose to fund them. Since starting its partnership with DonorsChoose.org in 2011, Horace Mann has funded more than $3 million dollars in projects, and its agents have also taught teachers about the program and shown them how to post projects.

“We know from our own educator surveys that teachers spend a lot of their own resources in the classroom,” said local Horace Mann agent Kevin Hunt. “Our partnership with DonorsChoose.org helps the teachers get the supplies they need to engage their students.3
